Austin Bans Plastic Bags - Should Laredo?????

Downtown Laredo  merchants will not be happy,
nor will Mexican shoppers.
The Rio Grande International Study Center has posted that Austin has banned plastic bags.  So what.  Austin joins about 20 or so cities in the United States that have banned plastic bags like the ones you get at the grocery store, or any retail establishment.

I have included the article that was printed in the Austin Statesman.   Click Here

I want you to read the article, then read the comments made by the public.  They are 10 to 1 in opposition to the ban.  And they threaten to vote out the council who passed this ordinance.

Laredo city leaders, take note.

  1. You think Austinites are mad now, just wait until businesses in Austin take a hit. The good news for Laredo is that if the city tries a full ban again, the Texas Retailers Association is ready to fight it again.

  2. The Rio Grande International Studies Center is doing a local "survey" of citizens to see if they favor a ban. But my guess is the survey is loaded against plastic bags.

  3. No one from the Rio Grande Int. Studies Center has interviewed anyone in Downtown Laredo including business owners. My guess is that they won't interview anyone downtown because they know the survey results will contradict their expectations. I agree the survey is "loaded" and I bet the survey is only being conducted in areas that will favor a ban. They are wasting their time, the real fight will be on if they try to push a complete ban.

  4. Let me know how I can help prevent this intrusion by local government.
