Sara Hates Laredo - Is She Wrong

Check out the U Tube Video:
Sara Hates Laredo. Is She Wrong?
I did not post her picture......my choice.

Check out the video, then let's talk.

Is Laredo a crime ridden town that is racist towards white people?  Is Laredo filthy, and a large 250,000 person ghetto?

The real answer lies somewhere in between what Sara says and what her "haters" say.

I have lived in Laredo for over 20 years.  I have grown to like Laredo.  But, when I first moved here is was total culture shock.  The idea that people could, or would not speak English in the United States took a lot of getting used to.  It still does after 20 years.  How would you like it if your food order at a restaurant would be screwed up on a regular basis, or you can't get a plumber or repair man to fix a problem because they don't speak English.  Yep, that took some getting used to.

Now Sara is wrong in her diagnosis of the language issue, as Laredo, unlike any other large border town I have been to, still has very strong ties to Mexico.  So, being a retail oriented town, it caters to Mexican shoppers.  It is almost impossible for a non-Spanish speaker to shop downtown, other than pointing a handing over money.  However, Laredo is 99% or so, Hispanic, and Spanish is what seems to be spoken at home with the kids.  I will not get into the educational aspects the language issues cause, but they are immense.

Real crime is not a big problem in Laredo, other than auto theft, and because of new techniques at the border, that crime statistic is falling some.  Laredo is as safe, and in some cases safer, than most cities of it's size throughout the US.

Traffic and drivers are a problem in Laredo, and are NOT comparable to most cities in the US.  People do STOP at stoplights in other cities.  Laredo is the worst.  Also, the idea, that "My Time Is More Valuable Than Yours" seems to be what motivates Laredoans to have to be the first one in line at the next stop light.  Nobody, and I mean nobody, slows down to get in behind another driver, even if they are going to have to make a turn that would cause the other person to have to stop.  Yep, I must be first, because I am in a hurry, and the hell with you.  This is not normal.  Also, this is the only town I have ever lived in that does not turn stoplights to flashing yellow during slow/no traffic times.  Like Loop 20, why do the traffic lights need to turn red at the entrance to TAMIU at 3 a.m., or on Sunday early in the morning.  We spend millions on technology, but don't use it.

Trash....Sorry Laredo, Sara is right on.  There is an enormous amount of trash in Laredo and it is the people who don't care.  The litter just does not appear out of no where.

Is Laredo racist.  As a whole no, Laredo is not a racist town.  But, think about this, if you are standing in line at the grocery store and speak no Spanish, and the people in line are looking at you, and seem to be talking about you or your child in Spanish, and you hear a phrase you think is derogatory, you might come away and think folks are racist.  Sara is right, the little nicknames Hispanics use to designate whites can be misunderstood as being a slur.  Yep, end the wetta, wetto (SP) comments.  They are not taken well.

Even the Laredo city council, when approving the "Hispanic Medal of Honor Monument", responded to a question as to what would happen is a white person from Laredo was awarded the Medal of Honor by saying, "Well in that case, we would build them another monument."

On the positive side, Laredo has some very good and unique attributes.  I love the food, and most of the culture.  I again, realize where I am, and what this town is.  It is not mid-America, nor, east or west coast.  It is a US/Mexico border town.  The habits and culture are different.  They will not change.

However, driving, being kind and nice, and picking up trash are not cultural issues, but are issues of respect.  We can use a little more respect for each other in Laredo.

That being said, Sara, in my opinion, you are off base on most of your comments.  You really need to get some local friends who can help you understand more of the cultural differences you talked about.

  1. Tom, I think it is good that you can see things from her point of view and still disagree on many points. Any border town has a fusion....in Belgium, each restaurant we went to served in any of three border languages. Laredo des offer some beautiful culture. Being alone and foreign, a new young mother...I could see how negative perceptions might build. I hope she finds friends and experiences that can turn her stay around. I also hope some of the vicious backlash subsides since it feeds the violent perception....

    4. Laredo is a hell hole of corrupt politicians, horrible drivers, and racist Mexicans. Mexicans are racist to anyone who is different than them. I am Mexican American and I hate it here. There there is no place to exercise, nothing to do, and you can encounter some of the worst drivers in the world. I go to Texas A&M International University, and I can't wait to graduate. I go to Houston 3 times a year just to tolerate living here people. People in Laredo are horrible drivers. They got their drivers license in a cracker jack box.

    1. Shame on YOU! Yes, Laredo isn't exactly the ideal city but if I stay it's by choice. Just like you and Sara have a choice. If it's so great somewhere else-don't let anything or anyone (for that matter) hold you back. You have stated your peace now depart from this "horrible" city. I too have lived elsewhere. And this place is not too bad. Racism is experienced to the fullest in parts of Mississippi, Alabama, etc. Gangs-go to a bigger city i.e. Chicago, Houston and you will realize what gangs are really like. Laredo still remains relatively safe. When I first moved here, I too "hated" it and wanted to leave. But I made an effort and made friends. They are the BEST ever and would not trade them for anyone. As a "white" person with no previous spanish lesson, I've managed pretty well. In all honestly, if you don't like Laredo, the solution is easy for YOU and SARA. Leave. Remember we were born with free will. Exercise it. We do live in the "land of the free"......

    2. Anyone at all who agrees whith SARA is just as ignorant as she is. I understand that Laredo has its flaws but so does any other city. NYC has a crme rate higher than most in the U.S. and its filled with ppl of different races and cultures. I think that SARA is just racist towards Mexicans. Just like everyone says if you dont try to adjust and hate it so much then LEAVE. You are here for a reason, just like Sara is here because Laredo has provided her husband with a job, especially in these hard times..... If the reason is not a big deal then express your free will and leave because you are FOR DAMN SURE the citizens of Laredo dont want you here just so you can critizize and judge them.

  4. I really appreciate your perspective. I agree with you entirely. I'm finding it a challenge to get my social media friends to be understanding with this young woman. It saddens me that many people are reacting aggressively to this video. I put myself in her shoes, and I realized that I too would have had a difficult time adjusting to a different culture, especially if i'm alone most of the time. I do believe that it would help if she made a couple of friends that would show her around the city so that she may be comfortable with her stay in the mean time. Some of her comments were offending, but that doesn't mean we all have to react with the same ignorance and malice. Unfortunately, instead of reaching out to her to change her perspective on this city, people are threatening her. I don't know who she is, but I sure hope a good soul in this city has some sympathy for her and helps her see some good in Laredo.

    1. Trust me, the people in Laredo have real hearts and souls. I agree with you, people should be sympathetic of her ignorance and lack of cultural education and understanding. I don't think she is alone, she has set herself apart from others with her Narcisistic ideas and generalizations of hispanics. I don't take offense at all being a Mexican-American, I simply accept who I am and respect others who are purple, pink, or green... Gosh I thought we were over this. A person like Sara needs to get both formal education, religious education, and a lot of COMMON SENSE.
The biggest shame is that the city of Laredo is actually feeding her and her family. Show some gratitude to the town that feeds you. Come to think about it, I cannot generalize like her and say that ALL Whites are white trash.

  5. It doesn't matter what is true because the fact is.....she just posted her opinions and basically spoke ill against 250,000+ Mexicans about a city that most of them are proud to live in. Good luck leaving your house without someone seeing and recognizing you. I hope she moves quick for her safety.

  7. I am a gringa from Ohio, and I have lived here in Laredo for 4 years now and dread the fact of leaving, i love it here, yes some things need to change, but I don't think the people here should. This is their culture. When I first came here, yes it was a huge culture shock, but only after a few short months I got a good job and made good friends, all my friends here are hispanic, what else would Sara expect. She messed up but to each their own.

  8. That video is hilarious. She has major culture shock and I don't blame her. I'm from Laredo and I feel like her. I hate going out in the town when I go back to visit my folks for the exact same reasons she does. The citizen's reaction to this is valid. But how often do we look at ourselves from an outsider's perspective? She has a right to her opinion and if people don't like it, prove her wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have been here about 7 years. I was blessed the moment I arrived to town I met friends and the man I married. At times I feel like an outsider, left out and called Gringa or Weda. But I like a lot of the culture and things about Laredo. She feels alone in a town that she is left out of. I do believe you make the most of where you are and I feel bad for her. Laredo is dirty and needs to be cleaned up. People do litter and do not respect property or other peoples property.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't think people understood the point she was trying to make because unfortunately she went about it the wrong way by insulting and diminishing a culture. Laredo has several issues we got that, but I mean if there was a place that was flawless then wouldn't everyone move there? There is no such place that doesn't have flaws. Yes some more than others but Laredo is not nearly as bad as she claims it is.

I honestly feel horrible for what she must be feeling right now. Threatening her is no where to go about things. We should really focus on trying to get her to understand our culture. Her children shouldn't have to suffer because of her mistakes. And again it was a mistake whether she admits it or not and we all deserve another chance.

Thank you again for posting this blog as there are many things I agree on. Such as Traffic and Language barrier. As far as traffic, the city is growing way too fast for the transportation layout the city has. But why is it growing because its a great place to be.

Language barrier well yea its a border town, majority of the people here are older some are uneducated (by this I mean no college) I know my parents only attended high school and didn't continue. That doesnt mean they're dumb it just doesn't allow them to grow and be open to newer things different than here. On a last and not so important note for future reference Guerro/a (Wetto/a) actually means blonde which is just another way of saying a white person its not racist. It's equivalent to us saying s/he's white

AND Loop 20 is awful with all those stupid Red Lights -_-'

    2. Victor, to your comment about her bashing a Culture,I am sorry, I don't care if it is a border town. This is still America. It's supposed to be American Culture, she should have fit in and felt at home being an "American". The language here is English! If she moved to mexico, could she throw a fit and demand they speak her language, probably not. She would be expected to learn their language, so why is it ok for other americans that don't know spanish to be ridiculed for moving somewhere in their own country for only knowing their native culture and language? I don't get it, and I am not racist. My fiancé is mexican and speaks perfect spanish and english and I am proud of who he is and what he does for a living. I have mexican friends who don't know spanish, how would they be treated in a place like Laredo? Their parents made them learn only English because they were American's and not Mexican's anymore, as they were born in America, not Mexico. What a crazy concept huh? I think the complacency in this country to make sure no ones feelings are hurt is what is causing this countries downfall. It's just a language barrier, oh well. OH WELL! Wake up sir, this is America, there should be no LANGUAGE BARRIER anywhere within our country. English is the language, whats the deal? Just wondering. And trust me Victor, Guerro or Wetto, you and I both know it is a derogatory term used by Mexican's. I should know, I grew up in New Mexico, close to El Paso. You think I haven't been called that, and had my Mexican friends that did know spanish that told me what it means? It's actual translation might be what you said, but in slang takes on a whole different meaning, depending on body language and tone or if they put Pinche or Puto in front of it. Sugar coat it all you want, but white people are very much hated in the border towns, and that I have experienced first hand. I had an elderly mexican women, looked sweet and grandmaish, at a restaurant in Del Rio spit in my food in front of my face and call me Guerro! So tell me was she just actually saying white boy or was her true meaning "F&*( you white boy! Actions and meanings are not always the true translation. So don't down play how they are and what they mean. I for one have never been racist or hateful to anyone based off of their color or background or lifestyle. But there is a different bread of people in the Mexican border towns and it isn't pleasant. So you may be saying He's white, but you really don't need to because everyone can see, it's not like we go around saying He's Mexican! You can hopefully see why it is a known cut down to white people, even those of us who don't know spanish.

  17. I agree with you on quite a few points.

Laredo does have a trash problem. We as a city need to work on this.

The language issue is just a barrier that people have to be willing to scale. When I went abroad I learned the language of my hosts. Heck, I learned mandarin to communicate in San Fransico with people who worked in shops in Chinatown. Now how different is that than learning Spanish to speak to downtown shop owners? It's a matter of will. Now are you going to go to Mexico, Japan, Italy or France and demand they speak English to cater to you? Laredo has such huge amount of consumers coming in from Mexico. It is after all a border town, with Mexico no less. I'm sure the same can be said of border towns in the north. Only difference is Canadians do speak English. We should take a look at how well the European nations interact with one another. The US seems to stand firm on the Rnglish only aspect. Now as the official language of the country, I understand why so many people stand firm on speaking only English. I grew up in Laredo in an English speaking household. So English is my primary language, but I grew to speak Spanish, German, French, Italian and Mandarin. I'm currently learning Japanese. If you talk about Laredoans not improving by learning English, why not be the bigger person and learn some Spanish and lead by example.

Now as far as crime goes, we're a safer city than most people think. Violent crime isn't as high as many people would think. Now theft is a different story, especially auto theft. However, any border area towns (both Mexican and Canadian) are higher in auto theft because of their proximity to the border and the ability to cross the border into a foreign country. The last time I checked auto theft rates, Houston ranked the highest in Texas.

Now I do partly agree with the traffic comments. A lot of people drive aggressively here. However, I rather face Laredo traffic over Houston, NYC, LA, Dallas, OKC, Paris, and a few other metro areas. A lot of Mexican drivers do give me a headache. But it is different to drive over there. I'm not to fond of driving in Mexico, the laws are different. But not every driver is a maniac and I do find driving in Laredo to be rather the same as other metro areas.

Now the homeless issue. Here is my problem with what the lady said. Now if she's never seen a person try to wash a car windshield at a stop light: either she's not telling the truth or she is from a very small town (nigh a hamlet) that has been fortunate to see a homeless issue. Now at least this town doesn't bus out their homeless to other cities like a few other metro areas. Laredo does try to help. I know this is true because I volunteer my time with a few organizations. Let's face the fact that times are very tough right now, the proverty rate has increased on a national level. She reacted the same way most people do, which saddens me. A lot of the time I purposely keep loose change in my cup holder to give people. If I don't I will run to a fast food restaurant, gas station, or small store and buy the person food and drink and in some cases, dog food for their pet. Now looking at our homeless population, a large percentage of them are from out of town and nearly half that I've encountered are caucasian. This is a national problem that has be addressed not just a Laredo problem.

  18. Just as many people have said...we live in America and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I'm pretty sure if she had just worded her video just a little bit differently the public reaction would not have been so negative on her. She has only lived here 3 monthes and has already had (as she mentions) a lot of bad experiences. Why on earth would she put herself out like that? Did she even think about her husbands job or her kids safety for that matter? I honestly hopes that no one in Laredo is dumb enough to try to hurt her or her blue eyed babies. She has many valid points in her video. We all know that there are many bad drivers out there, in Laredo and everywhere else in America. I have lived here all my life and have never encountered illegals in my backyard....and I lived by the river. Many of the things pointed out in the video are not just things that occur in Laredo, they happen all over the USA. #JustSaying

  22. Buenas noches,

I dont know why everyone is so angry towards this video and this woman she just made a video stating her feelings. All Sara did was point out certain things that botherd her about Laredo. She didnt intend to insult anybody and she wasnt talking about everybody as a whole she was talking about some people. I think we can all agree that we have witnessed some of Sara's claims here in laredo because you would be lieing if you said that this young lady was completley made her statements up.

  25. you know i think the problem with her video is HOW she expressed herself. you can feel the hate and venom pouring from her voice.
What is sad to me is the reaction to it. The people who have reacted violently and just as hateful has completely cemented how she feels about Laredo and has completely fortified her stereotype.

I have been in Laredo for over a year now and while it has some struggles like EVERY OTHER city, it has some amazing qualities.

I would really like to see more activities planned by the city or other community out reach programs. I would also like to see more trash cans out. I have not taken a closer look but if they placed trash cans with every bus stop they have here, i really believe that could help with the trash issue. I also think that the programs they do have need to be better advertised. Laredo has great potential but until the citizen start pulling together, i am afraid that Laredo will be at a stand still

  28. I know how you can make Laredo better: Get a bunch of gringos to run the city! Ja ja ja! Just kidding...kinda. Laredo, TX is a completely different specimen of a city. If you're not born and raised there, the chances are you won't really like the place. I will go on to say that even folks from The Valley (McAllen, Brownsville, etc.) don't really like Laredo. It all boils down to preference. Most Mexican immigrants (illegal or otherwise) don't come to the U.S. to live on the border, they choose to live further in the interior where it's not just an American extension of Mexico. It's what they've dreamed of; cleaner towns with better amenities, better educational systems, brighter politicians (did you see the mayor ramble on about nothing? He completely solidified the girl's complaints!), etc. It baffles me that such a large, confident city could be so butt hurt from a little ol gal's YouTube rant? Another thing: I guarantee that if I were in Laredo and starting referring to the folks there as brownies or darkies or whatever the equivalent to guero is, people would DEFINITELY be offended and assume I'm racista! For the record I'm no more, or less, racist than any of you (matter of fact my wife is Mex, and so are my kids!)
The only thing that bothers me Sara is A) you failed to mention that Laredo is home to some of the most beautiful women in todo el Tejas, o en todo el Mundo! And B) Don't you dare bad mouth menudo young lady! That stuff is like mana! ( not the band my brown friends).

In closing, just relax Laredoans and take a long hard look into yourselves and ask this "if this were a fellow Mexican or South American saying these things would it bother me this much?" or "Does what she think really matter at all?". Puro take it easy gente and don't allow your mayor to speak publicly again...ever!

  31. I know this is old, but I just saw it. I am a Laredo born and raised 21 year old woman studying at UT Austin. I have learned alot about culture shock, and about understanding differences. Of course some things in Laredo like traffic should change, but...I've experienced the same problems here in Austin. As for the "slurs", honestly from a hispanic perspective most of us feel intimidated or better yet stunned by "gueras" or "wedas" which means blondes, simply because as you've all commented we are mostly 99% hispanic. Being bilingual I have never heard someone at a grocery store or shopping center talking bad about white/caucasian people in spanish, better yet I've only heard compliments or remarks on people's appearance. Now, of course, there could be some people who are disrespectful, but I haven't heard them. Any negative remarks have been about privilege, which I do not wish to discuss whatsoever. Anywho...I'd love to see what you're opinions are now on the issue :)

  32. I am just seeing this old post as well. I absolutely despise the city of Laredo. My background... White guy who was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. I was an officer in the Army for 9 years and have traveled to many places during that time. I now spend about half my life in Laredo working as a pilot. My first day here I went to a drive through at a Wendy's and the person only spoke Spanish. At first I thought it was funny but after a couple of weeks I realized this was normal here at several businesses. The drivers here are the absolute worst I've encountered, even worse than driving in Afghanistan at times. There's about a 50% chance any given day that I am held up in traffic by some half running truck trying to tow another vehicle down the road with a rope instead of calling a tow truck. Any time I go somewhere I'm lucky if I don't see someone begging for money or trying to sell me something in a random parking lot. People in general are less courteous here than most other places I've ever lived. I realize this is pretty much an unorganized list of complaints and probably won't be read by anyone..... But it honestly makes me feel better to write this. This city drives me crazy and I feel sorry for people who actually have to live here, especially if they are white. The illegal population problem is insane and would take me an entire day to gripe about. The bottom line is that Laredo makes several negative top 10 lists for a reason, it's not just because of pissed off people writing comments. I could go on and on but it's getting old typing this on my phone.
