Monday Talk Jan. 24th

Charlie San Miguel Chastised by Laredo Morning Times

Looks like the editors at the Laredo Morning Times are calling Charlie San Miguel out for the continued questioning of police chief Maldonado at the last city council meeting.

I did not see the meeting, so taking what I can from the LMT, Charile was questioning the police chief as to why he did not honor a call by the police union to add 10 officers for park patrol only.  The chief, and city manager responded that the chief was in charge of the department and that with the resources available, the chief did not feel he had the manpower to assign officers to patrol only parks.  And the chief further stated that officers on normal patrol cruise through the parks on a regular basis.

The LMT seems to think that Charlie may have other things in mind than just park patrols.
I wonder if it could have something to do with getting a relative in as a new police chief, or at least grandstanding for the police union whom supported him during the campaign.

PS, the call for the 10 additional officers to patrol the parks took place over 2 years ago...Charlie was not even a blip on the city council screen at the time.

Me thinks LMT might be onto something.

Henry Cuellar on national TV?

My bets are that our U.S. Congressman will, again, have front row seating to allow him some national TV face time tomorrow night when President Obama enters the House of Representatives chambers.

As in years past, Henry has been front and center.  I expect nothing less this year.

Remember when Henry was chastised by the democrats for hugging George W. Bush.  Won't happen this time, but bets are hugs are in order.

Maybe, just maybe, Henry will sit next to Nancy Pelosi???????  Surely Henry will not be one of those democrats holding hands with republicans in a "show" of bipartisanship.  No way.

We will see about 7:08 p.m. tomorrow.

  1. Oh... I get it. It all makes sense now. Charlie San Miguel's twin sons both applied to work at the Laredo Police Department, but were disqualified because they allegedly misrepresented information on their applications. Looks like a personal vendetta to me.

Fire Chief Steve Landin was not about to upset Charlie San Miguel. Landin hired both twins. By the way, this was a violation of section 12.04 of the Laredo City Charter (anti-nepotism law).

    Section 12.04 Nepotism
No person related within the second degree by affinity or within the third degree by consanguinity to the Mayor, any Council Member, any elected City official, City Manager, or any member of any City board or commission shall be appointed to any office, position, clerkship, or other position with the City. This prohibition shall not apply, however to any person who shall have been continuously employed by the City for a period of two (2) years or more prior to the election of the Mayor, Council member, or elected official or to the appointment of the City Manager or member of a board or commission related to such appointee in the prohibited degree.

  2. Another local public figure that should be investigated is Judge Ramiro Veliz Jr. and his son Ramiro Veliz III. The judge's son Veliz III is a lieutenant as a constable and now he was appointed a UISD SCHOOL BOARD Member. He only holds a Associates Degree in Criminal justice without having any prior experience in education. Do we want people like this to make school decisions that affect our children? They should investigate more cases like that in Laredo so we may clean this town from people like San Miguel and put well prepared scholars into those public administration positions.

  3. Rolando Rolly Saenz is the best Candidate to be Justice of the Peace.(2014)http://www.rolandosaenz.com/ I know that he has been preparing himself for his position for many years and has a lot of experince. Judge Veliz JR. does not even know how to speak proper English and of what I know he has never described his level of education and preparation for his position. Along with that I have notice that he practices nepotism corruption by getting his sons Ramiro Veliz III a job as a Constable in the same district. He son was recently been appointed a UISD school board member which involves critical decision making duties for the future of our Laredo students. His level of education is an Associates in Criminal Justice(non related with education) with no prior experience with teens or children education. I am a University scholar with more education than him and much younger than him and I believe that there are many other scholars with education degrees that are well prepared to manage those positions. So if Laredo has a University full of prepared citizens for those positions why would we want an individual who is only known because of his father Judge Veliz Jr. and has no preparation for that position? Lets remember that their decisions reflect on our Laredo students regardless if the decision is illogical. Remember that an IGNORANT can not teach another IGNORANT of what is right or wrong. Even for the constable position the University is graduating hundreds of scholars every semester that have studied the Criminal Justice field enough to get the opportunity for a position that he has. This is how you detect nepotism.
