If I remember correctly, Laredo and cities all along the border were against the "Sanctuary Cities" legislation last session. I remember the chiefs of police saying that it was not the job of city police departments to enforce the US immigration laws.
And yet....they do. I have read many instances over the last few weeks of individuals arrested in Laredo, McAllen and other areas "being turned over to ICE" by local police departments. They would not have been turned over to ICE if the police had not inquired about their immigration status.
So, what makes that OK and not the legislation that was being proposed? Or was the vocal opposition just that, vocal opposition that meant nothing.
