Great Leaping Lemur's Laredo

Laredo is soon to join the American Association Baseball League with other teams such as the Sox, Diablos, Redhawks, Railcats, Air Hogs, T Bones, Cats, Saltdogs, Captains, Explorers, Pheasants, Saints, Wing Nuts and Gold Eyes.

Next spring when the freshly mowed grass at our new ballpark is ready for play, and the chalk lines have been laid, the scoreboard turned on, the peanuts and cotton candy are ready for sale, our new gates will open. And while “Old Glory” is waving in the southwesterly winds, the home team will take the field as the stadium announcer blares out the words, “Let’s have a big Laredo welcome for your hometown Lemurs. SAY WHAT?

Lemurs: (lē′•mər) are a clade of strepsirrhine primates endemic to the island of Madagascar. You know that island just off the coast of Africa. Or, as some of you may remember, the kid’s movie made a few years ago.
Well you rabid fans of baseball, those of you, who in the past have rooted on the Broncos, the Apaches, and the Tecolotes...well now you have the ever aggressive, tough as nails, tobacco spitting, bubble blowing, Lemurs. The kids might love the name, but I wonder will mature adults wear a Lemurs hat or T shirt?

There will be those that say, well this is a marketing goldmine, as the kids will want to buy anything Lemur. Well, if the team had been named Generals, or anyone of the other names, the kids would still have wanted to buy the hats and shirts. And the parents most likely would be more willing to wear a Generals hat versus a Lemur hat. Of course I could be wrong.

And wrong maybe I am, as I sit at Scholar’s Cafe and write this blog, three young ladies come in and tell me they like the name Lemur’s. They think they are cute. CUTE, there is no CUTE in baseball.
No matter the name, I will be there on opening day....hopefully rooting for my old hometown T Bones. But on game day minus the T Bones, Lemurs it shall be.

  1. Its amazing that both the sports and LMT editorials criticized the name. But, when it deals with corruption and kickbacks from Olivares and company, well, then its apropos of what's to come.
